Burn Accidents

"Burns are extremely painful can have long-term consequences"

Burns are extremely painful and their long-term consequences can be devastating. Severe burns can cause severe distress, both physical and emotional, especially when permanent disfigurement has occurred. Coupled with the scarring and dramatic mental effects; burn victims are extremely susceptible to infections which often require frequent trips to the hospital. Depending on the severity of the burn, the victim may deal with lifelong consequences such as irritation to sunlight, constant dryness and irritation, and permanent scarring.

Most common burn injuries are caused by: auto accidents, motorcycle accidents, bicycle accidents, explosions and work related injuries. In most motorcycle and bicycle accidents the victim sustains burn injuries known as road rash. As a direct and proximate result most victims have permanent scarring and or disfigurement due to the burns.

After a victim suffers a burn injury it is crucial to see a medical professional as soon as possible. Immediate care is essential in preventing infection and limiting the extent that trauma that the severe burn caused.

Burns Are Graded From the Least Severe First Degree, Then Second, Third, and Fourth Degree Burns
  • First degree burns unlike second- or third-degree burns, which are more severe, first-degree burns only involve the top layer of the skin. If you have a first-degree burn, your skin may be red and painful, and you may experience mild swelling.
  • Second-degree burns affect deeper layers in the skin than first-degree burns and can involve intense pain. They affect the epidermis and dermis, with the burn site often appearing swollen and blistered. The area may also look wet, and the blisters can break open, forming a scab-like tissue
  • Third-degree burns destroy the epidermis and dermis. Third-degree burns may also damage the underlying bones, muscles, and tendons. The burn site appears white or charred. There is no sensation in the area since the nerve endings are destroyed
  • Fourth-degree burns. Fourth-degree burns go through both layers of the skin and underlying tissue as well as deeper tissue, possibly involving muscle and bone. The burn site may look white or blackened and charred. There is no feeling in the area since the nerve endings are destroyed.

Burns are not just a result from fires or explosions. In many cases victims can be burned by scalding water, chemicals, electricity, and road rash.
